China and Korea foil final dreams(公式HPより)

China and Korea both progressed through to this evening’s final of the men’s team foil in the fencing competition at Al-Arabi Indoor Hall after superb victories against Hong Kong, China and Japan respectively.
In the first semifinal of the afternoon, China’s experienced trio of fencers Lei Sheng, Zhu Jun and Wu Hanxiong, took apart Hong Kong, China’s team 45–28 largely thanks to an 11–0 win by Wu over Cheung Kai Tung in the sixth bout.
China were only three points ahead going into this bout, but Wu, who won a team gold in Busan 2002, put the match beyond Hong Kong, China’s grasp although they bravely tried to fight back, but with little effect.
“I was very confident,” remarked Wu when talking about the sixth bout. “The scores were tight from the start. I felt that when I pulled the score to a bigger lead it gave the whole team confidence. We are also clearly the stronger team so, even when we were a few points behind, I was not nervous.”
The second semifinal saw a close tie between Korea and Japan, with the Korean’s just winning 45–40. Both teams had enjoyed comfortable quarterfinal victories against Uzbekistan and the Philippines and entered their last four match full of confidence.
Japan held the early advantage in the contest and when Kenta Chida won bout five against Ha Chang Duk 12-6, the Japanese team led 21–17 with four bouts remaining. Korea, however, gradually closed the gap to draw the scores level 33–33 going into the final bout.
In a cracking encounter, Ha was able to recover from his earlier setback against Chida to overpower Yuki Ota by 12–7 and wrap up the match for his team. Recalling Korea’s late fightback, Japan’s Ota remarked after the match, “When I saw that Yusuke Fukuda was falling behind [penultimate bout] I was so worried.
“It is a lesson for us and we don’t want this to happen ever again. We really wanted this one [team gold]. It would have been better if we were up against China for the semifinals. We haven’t played Korea for a while.”
